I am trying to do a simple animation - and individual parts rotating / translating are not a problem - but at the end when i try to rotate everything at once around a single axis the group "blows apart" - Any guidance or help would be great, and i you need additional images to see what i have done wrong please let me know.

I would try to add the entire model set in a new sub group. Then you can apply the last rotation (animation) to this group. That should keep the parts together.

That didnt seem to work, of course that is assuming i did it right...... ;)
Try both Global and Local modes when rotating, I know it shouldn't make a difference, but sometimes It does. Just to troubleshoot.
Yeah, i have tried every combination of setting with the animate rotation tool i can see. :(
