Title: Mercury Mist Topaz
Post by: youknowwho4eva on November 08, 2011, 11:34:21 AM
I'm working on some jewelery, and I want to make a good render of the stones which are a type of topaz called Mercury Topaz. It has a very rainbow look to it. Like the one on this page http://www.jtv.com/Nigerian-Mercury-Mist%28Tm%29-Topaz-Average-7.00ct-12mm-Round-Checkerboard-Cut/1107824,default,pd.html Is it possible to get this looks with just material settings?

I did this quickly, but it could help you : play with texture and transparency...

Ah yes, I was thinking either a texture or label would be needed. I was hoping it could be done without, but there are so many colors in one stone, I think that was high hopes.

Try the gem material type, set the overall color of the stone with the color control. Then set the abbe number to something around 35 to start. Then lower the abbe to get more of the prism effect.

I ended up using a plastic, I forget the combination (I have it at home) but I set the Diffuse Specular Diffuse Transmission and Specular transmission to 4 different colors, and it came out very well. When The ring comes in, I'll share the video I made in the Beta, till then it's a secret  ;)
