Title: REQUEST: Pipe thread normal map
Post by: DriesV on October 31, 2012, 01:33:19 AM
Hi,

Can somebody please share a good normal map for pipe threads (e.g. ISO 228)?
The KeyShot bundled normal map 'Horizontal_Tubes_Normal.jpg' is working great for far shots, but I need better fidelity for close shots.

greetings,
Dries

Why I ask:

Adding threads as geometry gives very good results, but it is a pretty laborious job.
Take a look below at the steps needed to do this in SolidWorks and what it looks like rendered.

How can I reach similar (+/-) results by using textures only?

Nothing beats real geometry for realism.

Plus, with a texture you won't get the the "visual deformation" on the sides of the screw. As you said, it looks ok from a distance.

Are displacement maps coming to KeyShot 4?
Adding threads would be a perfect use for it.

(Btw, where is that KS4 beta...  ;D)

Displacement maps are not coming for KS 4 - sorry. Beta will be a while until we can hand it out.
