I like it John.  It would be interesting to place a metallic reflector outside the frame of the shot, and use it to bounce a couple of colored lights onto the base of the crystal.  Curious to see how that light would transmit up the length of the crystal.

Love it. Amethyst would be a challenge, and where some volume rendering would come in handy.
