Stopping the real-time update, is it possible?

Yes, I paused real-time render, the checkmark appeared, and then the scene STILL re-renders FOR EVERY CHANGE I MAKE.   

I had a bunch of materials to apply, and waiting for the rendering to clear up after each is applied so I can see the next item is becoming quite "old"....  And so will I before I get done.   The alternative appears to be manually editing each separate individual object in the sidebar, which is even less appealing, as well as inconsistent, and silly.

This is compounded when working with the portable, which is just 2 cores, and thus slow.

Manual has not helped. 

But I assume there is a way OTHER THAN "Pause real-time render", since that does not seem to work.

The realtime render will restart as you add your textures and materials ... Why? You may ask, well because those textures and materials will bounce light around in different ways, reflections will need to be updated and so will the shadows and illumination. If you need to do lots of materials, there is an editing mode where shadows and reflections are not calculated, not as pretty as the RT render but allows you to work quicker :)

For this it only has to be good enough to identify the objects so I drag the material onto the right one.

Well, it's better than using full quality, not so good as just freezing it and giving us a manual button for an update

That's what the pause button does. You can make changes then resume :)

Iv been beta testing KS6, which has realtime 'region render'. Whilst this seems like a minor new addition, it can really speed up my workflow (I also mostly work from a laptop... which are 'limiting'). I generally work in full screen mode, which is slow given the MBP retina screen high pixel count. But with KS6 being able to concentrate all the power onto a particular object is SUCH a bonus. For me, this function has addressed some of my previous frustrations that were similar to yours. To be honest, i accept that a render will refresh/restart with every single change I make, whether it be materials, lighting or camera setting. But what really cheeses me off if when my realtime render refreshes because I have to check the ribbon for some reason (usually to see haw many cores I have assigned). For that reason I would quite like to see "No of Cores" displayed in the HUD (which is WAY more useful in KS6).

And it would be great if it DID THAT....  but it re-rendered despite the button.....
