Infected human being, mutant's properties:
the skin becomes calcified scabs and from the bones begin to grow crystalline protrusions (restricted movements).
In the back of the shoulder area, under the crust, it forms a big organ/bag, able to produce an acidic liquid which is then sprayed from the fingers to attach and infect other persons.

Since you clearly thought about the biology of this monstrosity... What biological function do the crystalline protrusions have? Light infiltration of the bone marrow? :)

Dries, your idea is pretty awesome!

I designed this concept for an Indie Videogame (don't know if they are still working on it, probably everything stopped) and, in a few words, an epidemic virus attacks humans and there are different stages and  developments of the disease,  in this case the mutant is highly attacked on brain and he's responsable for the direct contamination. Scabs/crystalline protrusions become a sort of armor so to increase the  possibilities that the virus can survive inside.

For example, in an other development of the virus, the human is partially attacked on brain/body,  protusion grow endlessly in some areas, such as the forearms, and in this case the protuberances can become sharp (intentionally broken or sharpened) and used as a cutting/fighting weapon, shield or shoot as quills of the porcupine.

In another case the virus doesn't attack the brain, so these humans are mentally sane, but they must cohabit with protrusions, so they often file them,  make decorations on them, etc etc.

So crystals principally were a functional/aesthetic choice :)
