Hi Guys

Good day.
I am new to keyshot.
Recently I am working on this project that requires renders from a given CAD data.
One major issue that I encounter is to mimic the actual material that was metallic spray painted.

Inside keyshot, I am using metallic paint and it comes with clear coat options. However, the actual render appears to be too 'clean' and does not describe that layer of transparent spray coating despite trying various clear coat combinations.

So I like to seek your expertise on what kind of workflow would you adopt in order to achieve this effect? Or do I need to go further into node based editor compositor to achieve that effect?

Hope you can give me your precious advice. Thanks in advance  :)

The first thing to do (if you haven't), is to switch your environment to something other than the "Startup" environment  (try something in Studio/Panels/ to begin with).
Then in the metallic paint options you can add a very small amount of noise to the clearcoat (.001 to start) and see if that is enough or too much.
You can also set the gloss level higher than the default (I think it is 1.5). Try 2.0 and see if that starts you in the correct direction.

One big tip for someone new to Keyshot is.. Most of the sliders only go to a certain number if you drag them, but you can usually type in a number higher than the slider will go.

Good Luck

Hello modonaut. As Robb says, illumination is the key to see what's really happening with your materials. Regarding the clear coat aspect, i once faked this effect by duplicating my geometry, and setting the scale to something like 1.001 and applied a glass material to that duplicated piece. I'm attaching a picture of that as an example, maybe you could try something like that.

Hi Robb63 and NM-92.
Many thanks for your help.

That 1.001 scale-up worked for me!
Now I remember seeing a modo rendering tutorial (a few years ago) that covered a similar technique.
Quite surprise that it worked in keyshot!

Thanks :)
