I want to soften the ground reflections and can't seem to do this without loosing the entire black background... Can anyone offer some wisdom in this department? Here are my settings...

Use an actual ground plane instead - you can add it under the EDIT menu. The ground material on the plane allows you to control the reflectivity.

The neat thing about adding a ground plane is you can apply any material you want to it.  My favorite is "Frosted Glass", and you can tweak the roughness to suit, from a very soft reflection to a hard edge.  I use the "Ramp" plane almost always.
