Hello,

Suddenly a flow of releases here.

Here's a project I've been working with for some time now. I had the joy to share an office space with the innovator of this product at my 4th year in the university. I distinctly remember him spending most of time in the toolshop, which would result in the first prototype at that time. Since then, I've been brought in now and again to do some simple renders to evaluate materials and design for the revisions. Now they have landed on this design which they call RØST coffee roaster, which they won first prize (with 1M NOK) in a startup challenge a few months ago.

They wanted a white background in this first batch, but I will hopefully be included for future in-context renders as well.

If you are interested, you can read more about it at www.roestcoffee.com

Hope you guys like it!

Bravo Magnus,
One more time , is perfect !
What's the process for the flames render ?

These renders make me want one and I don't even like coffee. Great work Magnus!

Hats off to you, Magnus. First and last two images (yes, i like close ups) are stunning. I'd love to see this one in a dark rough environment like your Norbit Antenna set of images. Just a preference though, nothing to critique.

Thank you so much! Greatly appreciate it:) I'll make a short breakdown in the next post. Hope you don't get too disappointed though, as it's a very simple trick.

Thank you so much, Nicolas. I agree wholeheartedly. I tend to like the dark side (hm) of renders more myself, but the client wanted the light background so that's that. His argument about it "being easier to manage on the website" is a solid argument though.

A quick breakdown of the gas flames. This isn't very complicated, and I guess it sort of only works in one angle. Still, turned out alright :)

1. First of all, I projected the curve of an inner cylinder in the machine to paint myself the flames in photoshop. This was done by downloading some  gas flames images and mixing up this up in photoshop to create the flame texture (attachment one).

2. Imported a plane and positioned it such that it lined up with the holes. Used an emissive material and the same texture both in the diffuse and opacity channel

3. Patterned the plane to cover the remaining holes.

4. Now here comes the tedious part: I unlinked the materials between the patterned planes and varied slightly with texture brightness, emissive intensity and very subtle position angle variations for each plane to give a vivid lifelike apperance.

That's about it. The last attachment shows a challenge i didn't quite understand at once, where the planes would show if they were stacked in the view angle. This was solved by increasing the Ray Bounces to 33, which was one more than the total amount of planes in the pattern.

Magnus I'm really loving these! Great textures on that front metal part, roughness I assume?

Was everything modeled in NX?

Thanks for the flame breakdown! Having spent some time doing those myself I know how hard it can be to get solid realism, and you've nailed it :)

Thank you Richard! Most appreciated :) It is indeed a roughness map (I love them!)! As well as a diffuse and normal map. I haven't been involved much in the modeling procedure unfortunately. Was only some minor geometry prep. Startup companies wants to do as much as possible themselves, so I think this final version was modeled up in SW. The coffee beans are from turbosquid, so I won't take much credit for those.

This is amazing, look at that wood! I also love the way the blue flames turned out
