Is there anyway to hide what's UNDER the ground when using a backplate?

I typically like to set vehicles a bit down into the ground, so the bottom of the tire has a bit of surface on the ground. Of course, when I use a backdrop, you can clearly see the bottom of the tire. And, when I create a curved stage for the render, I can no longer see the backdrop and I have to spend lots of time trying to light the stage (without lights, but emissive lighting) and it takes forever.

Am I missing something? If not, is it possible to put this feature in a future release?

Wouldn't it be better/more realistic to apply this to the model?

Perhaps if you're trying to model flat tires, or tires that never go round :-)
