What is the function of Ground Size?

Playing with the ground size, gives me (in my experience) an opportunity to make shadows more sharp (or edgy if you will). This occurs when you make the ground size very small. However, if you make it too small, it could cut away a part of the shadow.

Will post a comparison picture later today.
