Hi,

I came over a sketch of a couple of shure earbuds concept (http://plllus.tumblr.com/post/143153995701). Given the precise projection drawings, the modeling wasn't too much of a challenge.

I tried to utilize the cloudy plastic to get that silicone look for the rubbery buds. Rendered out with 1024 samples overnight. I still ended up with some minor fireflies though, and I'm uploading both before and after post.

By the way, this new material is yet another reminder of Blinn's Law: "As technology advances, rendering time remains constant." That constant part does not apply with my hardware.

Hey Magnus,

Looks great.

Re: the fireflies...
Can you share the scene with me? You can send through WeTransfer.

Thank you Dries.

Shure (badum-tss), I just sent you the .ksp.

Magnus,

Was this rendered using Product Mode?
I am currently rendering this scene "as opened" at 3840 x 2880, and I am not seeing any fireflies in the Cloudy Plastic material. That is at 64 samples into rendering.

I am running build 7.0.378 though.

The settings used is what you got in the .ksp. Haven't made any changes to it. I don't understand why you're not getting any fireflies though. Build fix? I used  7.0.374 on this one.

It would be good if you could try again once a newer build is available.
It seems like it is fixed on my end.

Lovely stuff Magnus :)

For what it's worth, in every render that I've used Cloudy Plastics, I've got fireflies, no matter how many samples.

The only time I didn't get them was when I let it render overnight in Advanced Mode.

I'll give it a try, thanks.

Thanks John! :) Appreicate it.

Yeah, well luckily it wasn't a big deal on this particular image. Pretty quick fix with photoshop given the modest amount. Would be interesting to see how it behaves with physical lighting though.

On another note: I used the AO and the reflection pass with this shot. The AO was superb, but the reflection pass had a lot of pixelated artefacts (attached) as seen on the flat cable. Is this an expected appearance?

DriesV

Fireflies should not be an issue with Cloudy Plastic in general. Some noise can occur if highly saturated colors are used for either Transmission or Cloudiness Color.

If you are still experiencing fireflies or persistent noise with Cloudy Plastic, then please send your scene to us so that we can have a look.

I had forgot about the saturation issue - I have just re-rendered a couple of scenes with less saturated colours and it is way faster to render with much less noise - fireflies and the other weird 'blue' dust...

DriesV

The colored noise issue is related to the sampling of different wavelengths.
For now, it is a limitation to be aware of. It is something that may be improved at a later point.

This appears to be an issue with the Reflection pass for the Translucent material.
I filed it as a bug.

Thanks for discovering and reporting this, Magnus! :)

Hi Magnus,

The reflection pass issue has been solved in 7.0.385.
