To all,

I'm very excited to share with you my submission the 2017 KeyShot Render Competition, the MH-X3 Light Grenade. The model is based on a concept from Zach Oldenkamp and represents a huge personal learning experience for me involving multiple software packages, including Z-Brush, Moi3D, Fusion 360, and Keyshot.

There are many different types of materials in the project: gemstone, solid glass, cloudy plastic, anodized metal, rubber, painted metal, and more. Various 4k, 16 bit roughness maps were used to modify the microsurface detail of the model. These maps, combined with procedural bump maps inside Keyshot, were used to displace the surface detail further. In addition, there are three hidden area lights inside each luminous chamber to create an internal glowing effect.

The background gradient was rendered in one pass to capture shadows from the grenades on the ground surface using an area light. The grenades themselves were rendered in a second pass using an HDRI environment to capture more interesting lighting and reflections. The two images were then composited from the separate render layers to produce the final image. The depth of field was produced in Photoshop using output from the depth pass. Hope you enjoy!

I remember this project. It turned out really nice. Materials look way better now.
