Right now there is the Save Reminder, and the Backup revisions options, which are great, but it would be really nice to take that a step further and have a proactive save.

Combine the two, and make it automatic.

Automatically save a version every (x) min, and keep the last (x) versions. Cinema 4D has an option similar to this, and yes, while it can be annoying to all of the sudden have the software kick off a save operation while you're working, its a small price to pay.  I just lost about an hour worth of work, as KS crashed right when I hit the render button. No, I did not save, I was "in the zone" and really cranking out the work, I'd rather just have KS save in the background.

More and more applications are doing this, any online based software (Office apps online, all the google apps, Final Cut X does this, etc) so its becoming more acceptable to know that whatever you do will be saved. If you want to save a "state" or something to go back to if you want to "revert" then make that an implicit step.

My boiler plate disclaimer for all my software requests- I'm not a coder, I have no idea what it takes to implement this sort of thing, it might be crazy hard, it might be fairly simple in theory. Its amazing to think how this stuff works anyway. Look at the code that is there to make it do what it does is insanely complicated (to me at least) so i'm very humbly making this request.

Great suggestion! +1 on that.

Now that is how you request something!!

I like this. I've learned recently that Blender autosaves ever 2 minutes. So if you royally mess up, you have 120 seconds to quit the application and recover the document. This has saved me quite a bit.

Does it keep a number of version in rotation? Cinema 4d does that, so it gives you a little more time, I usually keep 5 and it saves every 5 min. Only issue is that with large scenes it gets a little tedious, so I might bump it to 10-15 min each. The nice thing though is that each backup in rotation is a brand new file, so if something is buggered in the file, it saves out a fresh copy. Not a huge problem anymore, but I remember when premiere would trash your current file because of a burp during a save operation.

I'm not entirely sure. I've just tested it after learning that it automagically does this and so far, it's proved to work. Due to it being an open-source program, I'll be there's ways to change how it does it and when.
