are you using the skin material from the library?

Very nice start ! You might be on to something here. just get that high shine off the skin and lets see what it looks like.

I can tell - that's why it doesn't look like skin. The skin material in the library is accurate ...

same scene, less brightness of the environment, and default skin material (only scaled bumpmap)

Yes, Thomas is right...

Skin should be shiny but not everywhere, look this exemple below : Shiness is folowing the "bump map"... or skin imperfections...

I'm looking for a realistic look. This is what I got from the KeyShot Skin material.

In that last render, I think it shows you are not making the most of the Keyshot stock skin materials. There are tons of tweaks that can be done, for instance translucency adjustments alone can make it look very realistic.
