Hi people!

Here is something I had to try for myself ever since I saw these two great posts from EGON and Speedster:

Following their steps, since I had a porsche logo normal map
sitting on my hdd for a while, making the badge out of it first came to my mind, so here is what i have made...

Speedster

So cool!  It's great to see our juices flowing, thanks to Egon's simple little trick!

Thanks Bill!
Its amazing how KS can make beautiful render without need of complex 3d geometry.
Thank you guys for opening my eyes with your beautiful artwork ;)

Chad Holton

Looks great! Wait until you can use a specular map along with it.  ;)

Wow, Great shots.

Any Tips on creating a bump map or normal form a texture? Other than filter forge,
Bumps have been something I have avoided for no particular reason, But this has got me back interested in what is achievable with bumps.

Andy.

Andy -

I use Smart Normal.  It's free and works great.

See my July 12 posting in the Texture Mapping and Decaling section of this forum for an example.

Thank you Andy!
Like Ed, I also use Smart Normal because its very simple to use, you just need to import texture that you want to convert and thats it.

I usually make normal maps out of color textures (or photos) that I find on internet, sometimes when internet doesnt help you must resort to taking photo of that particular texture and then make a normal map out of that image. When you do that, its good to avoid taking photographs with flash turned on because it sometimes causes glare that can ruin the details in your photo.

Second thing when you make normal maps out of photos, its good to avoid taking picture of your object/surface with unnecessary shadows
on it other than shadows that represent depth, because in most cases that unnecessary shadows will be interpreted as bumps in your normal mapping software. Other than that everything relatively simple...

Hope this helps you Andy.
If you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Thanks for pointing me to smart normal. This is exactly the kind thing I was looking for :-)

You can take any image and apply it as a bump map.
