We had to limit the signature field as it was used by spammers to add links to random websites. We may bring it back as we have installed a number of filters to keep spammers away, and they seem to be working quite well :-) We will also look into showing the users on the homepage. It is being shown right now for the individual posts (you can see, who else is viewing the post).
