Threadripper 3960X vs older 2990WX for Keyshot?

Hi there,

I am in the process of building a new system for Keyshot and am looking at an AMD Threadripper for the CPU. I've been given two options from my supplier i.e. the newer 3960X or an older 2990WX.

The newer has fewer faster cores and higher L3 cache. The older has a greater number of slower cores and lower L3 cache.

Which will be the better choice for Keyshot? I am also not sure what role cache plays for Keyshot and also whether to take the "boost speed" into account as most of my renders and animations take days, sometimes weeks to process.

The specs for both CPUs are below and both retail for around the same money @ £1200 each.

I would appreciate any/all advice.

Threadripper 3960X
24 cores / 48 threads
Base Clock Speed 3.8 GHz
Maximum Boost Speed 4.5 GHz
L3 Cache 128 MB

Threadripper 2990WX
32 cores / 64 threads
Base Clock Speed 3.0 GHz
Maximum Boost Speed 4.2 GHz
L3 Cache 64 MB

From what I have read here, it really depends on the version  Windows OS you plan to use it with that can maximize the core utilitization and what other software you plan to for.

My guess is: 3960X will be better than 2990WX,
and in my experience, plain Windows10Pro (i.e. not for Workstations) is enough up to 128 threads.

We can find some 2990WX's scores of old "Camera" benchmark here: 455FPS by KeyShot8.2 (and 499FPS by KeyShot9.0).
And I've attached my test result of EPYC7402, i.e. Zen2 24core; 457FPS by KeyShot8.2.
EPYC7402 was running at 3.15~3.175GHz in boost mode and Threadripper 3960X will be running around 4.0GHz in boost mode.
So, I expect that 3960X will hit  550FPS or higher by KeyShot8.2 (and a bit more by KeyShot9.x).
