Has anyone had a crack at modelling snow?

I'm working on a company Christmas card and I have Santa on top of a slate roof but it looks too summery without snow. I suspect it'll require quite a tricky mix of translucency and reflectivity but if someone's already done it then a bit of festive sharing would be much appreciated...
