I work almost entirely in the automotive sector these days, but recently I was using some old solidworks data to refine some keyshot materials. One thing lead to another and I ended up with a mini project!

The metal is really reliant on keyshots in software material graph, using many layers and algorithmic functions. Its base layer is actually metallic paint before having several metallic shaders layered on top. I used spherical gradients to drive the dark areas affected by heat from welding and curvature textures to add edge wear. A lot of this will likely become simpler using the paint function in KS11, but that was not available at the time of the renders.

Lighting is almost all done via physical lights. The primary lighting is via area lights applied to simple panels with the odd spotlight or IES light used in select renders.
