When working on a big assembly imported from CAD systems (think auto body ion white chassis) it often comes in multi coloured because that is how the CAD file is set up. What would be useful would be a few selection/material application helpers:

1. Apply material to all visible parts
2. Select all parts with this material
3. Hide all parts with this material
4. Isolate all parts withn  this material (to hide all other parts without that material)

Another minor change would be to make the selection highlight in the Scene tree more obvious - at the moment it is a bit too subtle to pick out against a big parts list. It would also be excellent if the parts list would automatically scroll to the selected part in the tree when you select it in the model. Little things maybe, but they would make a huge difference.

You can do 2-4 today.

What do you mean by all "visible" parts?

I'll check the manual for 3  :D

By visible I mean a command that applies the active material to all the visible parts in the modelling window.

Well - 3 you do by doing 2 and right click and select hide selection.

Ok - understood re: visible parts
