diamonds canvas

Hi all,

i'm tryiing to make a canvas full of diamonds (or swarovsky cristals)...
Overall dimensions are 180cm x 50cm with many 1cm diamonds...

How can I obtain a good results, in your opinion?

Do I need to model the entire canvas with diamonds? Have I to use a texture (wich texture?)?
