Digital Mildew in KS4 [redux]

So I was having issues with digital mold on some surfaces, and got up from my computer to go to a meeting.

In my renders, using 32 then 64 samples, I was having serious problems...

Coming back to my machine an hour or so later, the real-time rendering had "solved" the problem, and the render looked great. I'm reduced to capturing screenshots of realtime renders to solve this material problem... any suggestions? I tried upping Samples & Ray bounces significantly, doubling values for shadows, aliasing, etc. Global illumination is on-

What does realtime do differently [if anything[] than the rendering process? I'm getting better results much faster (but at screen resolution) than I am rendering...

Did you check "sharp shadows"?

Also, you may want to try Max Time or Max Samples instead of advanced settings for your final rendering.

I ALWAYS use max time.  I love it.  After a while you get a feeling about how much time you have to give which render ... and the plus side is also .. if you let it cook for 1h and after 35min you see it looks good enough, you can stop the render.
The good thing is that if you deal with deadlines, you can tell people waiting for the render: "you'll have it by 4pm" and it WILL be ready then.  (Just hope you didn't forget to turn on/off certain objects before you start the render :P )

The rendering quality is very consistent (as in: exactly the same ;)) with the realtime window.
