Is manipulating the camera the only way to scale and position the backplate?
Or is there a separate control for that?

Thanks.

The backplate is fixed, like a mural painted on a wall.  It needs to be sized to your render aspect ratio.  There is no control over the backplate except "adjust image", which sort of lightens or darkens it.  A little trick- if you have a particular HDR you like, and a specific portion of it (when you rotate it), you can always render (at your target pixel size) only the HDR, with no model, then use that as your backplate.  This way you can also set the brightness, etc. the way you like it, then use the actual HDR in the final image at whatever settings work best.

Also, turn on the Ground Grid to position your model with the correct perspective relative to the back plate.
