Happy New Year !
Love the images. Can't wait to see more.
It's a keeper.

Happy New Year. Awesome work! You are using Z-Brush, I assume?
nice stuff , keep em coming.
Good to see organic stuff rendered with Keyshot...not that I dont like cars :P but still prefer flesh over metal (I reserve that for the music taste :P)

Hey Thomas, Thanks! Yes, there were sculpted in Zbrush.
Tim, Cheers.
evilmaul, thanks. Really looking forward to see what KS4 brings and hopefully most of the new additions will trickle into the educational version. :)
Patient zombie concept. Did a bunch of SSS renders to comp in Photoshop, I went with a simple 3 point light setup, the background was later comped in photoshop as well. I did 3-4 sss renders, a standard grey shader and an alpha matte. Hope it's not too obscene for you peeps.. but I mean if you watch Walking Dead, this is really not that bad at all.
Here's another concept I did. The idea started from a doodle. I had to quickly execute the sculpt to capture that image in my mind's eye.
Amphibious, subterranean, bug-eating pygmy creature. Tribal... I think. Ingestion happens in that orifice on his belly where insects are slowly dissolved by stomach acid. The spindly hook claw is for digging out insects in those hard to reach areas.
I hardly did any post in photoshop with this render. I rendered 2 different sets of SSS passes and a bone material pass. I then blended the SSS layers and masked out the bone material for his head. I'll post more shots soon.

Wow!
Also makes much sense from a biological point of view. ;D

New render with KS4. SSS Shader with spec, bump and diffuse map. Sculpted in Zbrush. Post work in photoshop. Character is Jawesome from the graphic novel, Last Man Standing: Killbook of a Bounty Hunter.

;D oof, fantastic!
Dominic, can you explain how you go about getting your models from Z-brush into KS with regards to all the UV's remaining in place?
Do you do it with UV master?
Cheers! M
nice job Dominic!
out of curiosity how much post processing have you done on the final render and whats your impression of KS4 so far?
mjb- Yep, I use UV Master and then decimation master to lower the polycount with Freeze UVs turned on.
evilmaul- Most of it is rendered in KS4. I can use a spec map now (thanks to KS4) and that helps a ton, seriously what we need next is an SSS intensity map, and a gloss map and we're golden for organic work. The only post processing I did on this piece are color adjustments and filter to make it look more raw and grungier. I also painted in some blood splats, grime and bg. Loving KS4 a lot, like I said, the inclusion of spec map is a huge help for organic work, and there are no more green artifacts.
Dominic, if you don't mind, I might need to pick your brains about this a bit more. I havent tried bringing a zbrush model into KS as yet and will have a go over the weekend.
If I get stuck would you mind a few questions?
Matt.
Sure. Just drop me a PM here or on facebook. I'll get back to you. It's not hard at all to be honest.
Fan-tastic! ;D thanks matey, appreciate it
Amazing render dude!
Martin
Love it! Gloss map / intensity map - please explain.
Thomas,
SSS Intensity map - A map to control how much translucency shows up in areas, instead of a flat value across the model, we would be able to paint a greyscale map to indicate which parts should have more translucency and which parts have lesser.
Glossiness Map- Greyscale map to determine how tight or broad the specular highlights are.. Evilmaul, you want to chip in? You're the surfacing guru. :P
Gloss map - isn't that the same as a specular map?
Intensity map - interesting. I can see how this can be useful for organic models. On the other hand, it would be determined by the thickness of the model in certain areas, or not?

By glossiness map, do you mean a map to control roughness? E.g. Fully white having roughness 0 and fully black having roughness 1. Or maybe the other way around? :)
I can see a lot of potential for worn materials as well...
The concept of 'translucency intensity' map seems interesting.
I can see it makes sense for organic models. Organisms are typically composed of multiple biological 'materials' that have different physical properties (reflection, refraction, IOR, translucency...).
I take that in zbrush you typically model your creatures as 'single parts' and not as 'assemblies' (sorry, I'm a CAD guy ;)).
Dries
hmm the spec map controls how intense/strong the highlights are and the gloss map should control how broad or tight the highlights are. That way you could do things like fake sweat or wet areas and it does not have to be modeled in, you would set the sweaty areas to a higher gloss and be able to control the spec intensity apart from the dry areas of the face with the spec map. Not sure if this relates to how KS renders but its the same for most 3d packages, thats how it is as far as I know. I could be wrong
for sss intensity map, the problem is sometimes you get sss in areas you dont. Sometimes I notice I get the right amount of SSS on the ears but realised it could be slightly lesser on the rest of the head, having that sss intensity map just gives artist more control. This is also available in most 3d packages.
Thanks again, Thomas.
cool!
well I honestly, at least for the things that i do, dont feel the need of having a SSS texturable channel as it would go against the philosophy of the package of being phisically correct. All the shaders out there are just hacks and in all the honestly they more or less and despite how many channels you texture, look like silicon more than skin. Henrik shader to me is the best translucency shader now commercially available.
As for the glosiness yeah that could be mappable too for the kind of effects that you highlighted...in this case it would be the roughness channel being mapped I believe.
Anyway regardless of all of this...great job on the shark guy :)
Fantastic work Dominic !
Shark-man has awesome texturing ! Very convincing ! I haven't seen one in real ( a regular shark I mean ) .. but I DO have Full HD tv and animal planet :D
For concept work, I find myself having to render two different SSS shots and masking between the two. That said, I agree with you about how Keyshot is a physically correct render and its philosophy to have real world shaders. It's just one of those good to have options available. I do think its one of the best SSS shaders around too and super easy to use which is a huge plus and time saver.

freaking Awesome
Jedi or Sith?

Brilliant. Makes me want to have a go at real sculpting with super sculpey clays....
... How does this dude eat lol ;D
Great question. He drinks.. mostly.. there are small orifices behind that front snout. It's all sculpted in, I need to post more shots. :)
haha cool :D can you imagine him in a fist fight? :P he wins for sure.

Haha yeah, super fun design. Just wanted to do something different. I'd imagine he would have a cowl on so that his neck is covered most of the time until the final reveal. :D
Hi, May I know what kind of material are you using for human skin? Thanks
kcimport, either human skin 1 or 2 and then some tweaking.
thanks!
Here's another piece. Rendered in KS4 and PS for touch up. Shaders for his accessories took little to no time thanks to the material library. :)
Domorian Warriors are fierce, tribal creatures, born into a warrior caste. Some veer far from their tribe, with a thirst for adventure and an eye on the bounty. Domorian warriors are known to have a nasty temperament and are often the first to start a fight.

Thanks for all the kind words!!
I see you had one of your model`s 3D printed and up for sale on Statue Forum. Good work mate :)
Another wonderful creature and image of it.
It's a keeper
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks feher.
Here's another piece rendered in KS4. Last design of the series inspired by the space opera genre. I wanted to portray a wise and stoic character. A teacher of sorts... or perhaps a sage herding livestock out in the desert plains.
Brilliant. Looks a little more aquatic than land based.
You should start a film series with all these creatures... :)
Skint, Sounds like a good idea. Now all I need is a script!
Here's my take on Gillman. The beauty shot was touched up in Photoshop. The profile shots are 99% keyshot with an adjustmnet layer added in Photoshop. Thanks to KS 4.1 , I can use color calibration profiles for my IPS monitor now!

Very nice. We have a plugin for ZBrush now in BETA that allows you to take you models from ZBrush directly into KeyShot. Let me know if you are interested.
Thomas, of course I am! I'm curious to see how it works.
hey Thomas and you say it like this? :P come on.....
does the plug in let you to export regular subd meshes or also HD sculpt meshes? (need this in particular)
ah forgot cool model Dom :P he looks scared :)
Marco - honestly I don't know. Want to try it?
hello, is this a windows only plugin?
It is also available for Mac OS.
Thomas, yes please :)
Just sent you an e-mail.

Thanks Marco. I tweaked his expression some more for the 3d print. Hopefully he'll look less scared :)
The plugin does not export meshes with subd levels at the moment, you'd have to collapse your levels. And as for HD sculpt meshes, I don't think it does that either, afaik.
yes I does not do that and also for whtever reason at home I get a msg saying that the model doesnt have UVs and/or textures and it wont push it to KS. Didnt run into this at work tho.
Is the plugin for a particular zbrush 4 revision?
I only tried it on 4R6.
Lovely works here man! Love your designs man!
Thanks Numioh.
Here's my latest piece.
Category IV Kaiju, codenamed :Hachiwara. I grew up watching giant monsters terrorize cities. Needless to say, watching Pacific Rim was like being a kid all over again. As such, I was inspired to create a Kaiju of my own.
I've been using the Zbrush plugin and it just saves me the hassle of having to export and import OBJ's. I can't imagine not having it as a part of my workflow now!

Handsome looking beast, reminds me of myself with too little sleep!
Martin
What a BEAST! Love the glow coming from his innards.
nice beast Dom!
how many times did you go see Pac Rim? :)
Nice Kaiju! Fits right into the film.
Lookin sick man!
Thanks guys.
Marco, watched it 3 times. I think it's finally wearing off. :)
Josh, thanks dude. The glow was done using an emissive material. :)
These textures are amazing! Even though I'm a KS power user, I have no experience with figures, so here's my dumb question- How do you and the other artists like evilmaul apply the materials, and in what format? Are areas selectively mapped like I do in SolidWorks? Is it just one huge dump, which I doubt? KeyShot should do a webinar just on figures!
Bill G
Awesome work - as always! Thanks for sharing.
As far as the texturing goes, it is all done in ZBrush. And the GoZ plugin brings it all over into KeyShot.
A 4-eyed monkey alien?. Perhaps a pirate or a smuggler... or the crook you want to look for when smuggling contraband items across the Enrovian space border. Let's call him Gruek.
It's crazy how I didn't have to unwrap UVs or export maps from zbrush for this piece. All polypaint was transferred using the Keyshot GoZ plugin, body, eyes and hair. The rest is rendering different passes in Keyshot and comping in Photoshop.
Amazing. How many polygons in this model?
Nice skills - love the wispy hairs
Martin
Just under 5 million polygons I think.
Here are some more shots.
Awesome stuff!
Looks great!
as gnarly as this guy looks, there's a sort of compassionate look in his eyes, like he's missing someone.
Thanks guys!
An Imp. This time I tried adding some peach fuzz. More shots to come.
Question: what happens with all these images ? Are these character designs for games / movie ? Or are these just art images you make ?
Well you certainly don't want that nibbling on your ear! Excellent modelling Dominic, pluck a few of those hairs on its head, they just look a little too uniform, or change some to be either darker or lighter just to add randomness to them.
Martin
cool Dom, like the peach fuzz.
is this interactive render?
I found that somtimes very small one are hard to sample and they appear just like bright spots on the surface. I hope that when we will have curves, this problems that smaller polygons have , will go away.
That's one ugly beast in a good way. ;) Nicely done!
More shots of him. With less pp in photoshop.
Thanks all.
Phillipe- these are just personal art pieces.
TpwUK- you're right about that. I'll have to look out for that next time.
evilmaul- yeah, that's the problem you see here. Even when I have really high settings for his peach fuzz, it still does that bright dot look. The longer strands are usually fine. This is not interactive render. Anyway, I definitely learned more things regarding fibermesh and rendering them in Keyshot, thanks for your advice!
Wow! Love the fleshiness.
Its right ear looks like a piece of bacon I ate yesterday... I will think twice before I buy another slab... :P
Dries

It would be interesting to see another "stage" of this creatures development.
He has a very Larval or caterpillar feel to him right now, so maybe it's worth exploring :)
Just a thought.
Keep rockin!

Nice addition. You have some great stuff.
I really need to learn ZBrush.
Thanks for sharing can't wait to see more.

Love every one, but my favorite has got to be that Scarab Dominic. Well done!
Thanks a lot everyone! I'll try to do a quick tutorial breakdown for the Keyshot process in the near future. If you are interested in the ZBrush part, here's a quick breakdown.

I dont quite understand. If you have such skill in modeling and rendering why not make something nice to look at
Because the world needs some ugly for the nice things to shine?
Honestly, I don't do any of this to please anyone. I just do it as personal art and at the end of the day, if I'm happy with it, that's all that matters. I make enough nice things at my day job. :)

Well done and super tutorial.
Gorgeous, all of them, including the process you've so kindly shared. Thanks again Dominic.
Skint, yeah I love Giger and Beksinski's work.
josh3d, Thank you!
Currently working on a piece with 50 million polygons rendering at 4k res and finally feeling the limitations of my workstation. Hopefully I can get a xeon workstation sometime in the future. :/
Let us know if you need something rendered. We can always let rip on our 200 cores!
I might just do that, Thomas. My .bip file is 2Gb now. It's a pain to work with and my frame rate is 0.9FPS. hahah
Awesome stuff!
Btw, I have a small 24 core farm (soon 32), that I'm currently subjecting to all sorts of tests, including having remote access to the network queue manager.
Drop me a PM if you would like to try it out! :)

Ya I'm doing that. It's just hard to pixel peep when the window is small. I had to rotate my monitor so that it's vertical in order to use the realtime window for a portrait piece. Fortunately, it didn't take too long to render!
Hey all, Here's my Sculpt-Off entry. Sculpt-Off was hosted by Pixologic at 3d Printer World Expo. Contestants had 90 minutes do finish a bust and it would be printed the next day. I did not win that 3d Printer but it was one of the most challenging and fun experiences in my life. I decided to take my creation to Keyshot and do a final render.

Awesome!
Nice! I`m going to ask you to send me one of your models in STL format one day, so I can print you one :)
nice image overall Dom! love lighting and composition.
The girl shoulders/arms though could use some more love, forms wise they lack of some anatomical structure.

Recap on my 2013 artwork. Most of these were rendered in Keyshot.

This is very nice Dominic, oozes mood and i like that. This pilot is 'On A Mission' and gives me the impression that nothing is going to get in their way.
It's been a while since i last saw a post from you, but boy have you made up for it :)
Well Done!
Martin
I love the alien pilot and the collage of all your work. Would make some very nice prints for the office!
Martin, Thank you for the kind words. There is more stuff that I've done but can't show due to NDAs and all of which heavily utilizes Keyshot. Hopefully I can share it with you all in a few months.
Thomas, thank you. Please tell me which images you want for the office and I'll send you the hi-res images. :)
Hey folks, created this Cthlulhu concept. Zbrush, Keyshot and Photoshop.
Recorded the stream and made them available here: https://gumroad.com/dominicqwek

Wooww!!!
Dominic amazing job, I really like a lot of their work.
Really a great artist, I'm a fan of their work and serve me inspiration.
thanks for sharing this absurd work. ;)
Oh wow Dominic, your posts seem to be getter with each one - You sir, have still not reached your peak, I look forward to seeing more from you for sure.
Martin
Fantastic as always. Did you posterize the Alien Pilot's arms/hands in photoshop? Very cool effect
Dammit! So awesome! You create such a creepy mood. And all the color is saturated inside the creepy worm snacks. Yum Yum. If I had those I would probably have a taste too. If I had a spiky moth mouth and fish gills and a fin and nothing else to do. Normal day all around, just polishing my skull and taking care of business. Super size mastoid process.
J
Thanks everyone. :)
Rex, yeah I believe it was the posterize filter added on a glass material rendered in keyshot. Thanks!
MAN your work is so freakin impressive ! Another homerun in my book. I can in my mine feel the textures, materials, skin in your images not just see them. I hope that made sense.
It's a keeper in my book.
Tim
feher- thank you so much!
Here's the latest tutorial. Biomech style inspired by H.R. Giger. Rendered the following passes in KS5, skin, dusty steel, black chrome, and a nice AO pass using gamma tweaks :)

You give Giger a mighty fine tribute Dominic :)

Been way too long since I updated this thread. Still using Keyshot for all my creature work. Here are some of the newer ones.
These two were done at a workshop for CDW school in Adelaide. Skin shader anyone? :)
Here are a couple of illustration technique exploration. I used Keyshot's toon shader to create subtle line strokes and rendered passes to comp in photoshop. After which I recreated some brush strokes in photoshop.
Some of you may know I produce my own resin kits. Here are pre-vis shots done in Keyshot to give a good idea of how the 3d print would look like. I do this for all my 3d printed pieces now. Having a proper camera along with realistic lighting and materials is one of the ways I use to identify if the details will hold up for print.
Not sure if I posted these before but seeing as my previous image links do not work now, I'll post them again.
I created a series of gumroad tutorials on creature concepting and how I use zbrush and keyshot to create realistic creature concepts. These are some of them. You can find my gumroad tutorials at gumroad.com/dominicqwek (http://gumroad.com/dominicqwek)
A series of alien skull designs. Rendered with stone materials in Keyshot. The HDR lighting editor was used to create custom lighting for each of these skull.s
Seriously good results Dom as always, really like the toon shade and PS work :)
Your work is new to me. Absolutely fantastic. Such a treat to see! Thanks for sharing!
These are some fascinating creature designs with a very nice subtle hint of H.R. Giger. Keep the monsters comin'!
Wonderful work.
Thank you for sharing.
