I had started doing some testing with material based booleans a while back, then put it on the backburner. I now know that this will be a new feature in KeyShot 7, but thought I'd post a couple of WIP examples nonetheless.

Cheers,
Eric

Oh, now that's clever - Colour me impressed !

Is this something done directly inside KeyShot?
I'm not sure I fully understand what is going on :)

Looks cool, though  8)

That is driving experimental features like backside mask to its limits.
Cool thing Eric!

Flipped normals (inside-out) cube with metal material and surface backside mask applied to opacity of 'cutter' geometry? Just a guess. Really cool.

??? My brain is still trying to understand, I think I get it, but then I don't. I'm sure more explanation will come soon with a well-written post by Eric.

El Polo

Awesome! :)
It is a native KeyShot animation "Cube Cutter"?

Great job and hope you will show us other boolean animations like this one!  ;)

Did anyone figure out how to set this up?
Would be really useful for a project I'm working on.

Seems like Eric has been inactive for quite some time  :-\

I'm pretty sure that a "Boolean part" with a backside surface mask in the transparency channel would show this effect.

But I have to give this a try.

Yeah, I thought too but couldn't make it work. Let me know if you succeed!

Not yet. Eric is still the nut cracker hero.
I even played with the new ray mask in 7, but couldn't make it work.
Sorry Esben. I have to think about it for a while.
I'll post a solution if I have one.

Uncracked nuts' annoying me.

Will Gibbons

Is anyone sure it was animated in KeyShot? hahaha

Ha, that is a good point. It is just that he says that it is a material based boolean. Would love to see that ksp!

If only rendered in KS, maximum troll level will have been reached.

I played a lot but can't find the right material graph setup combining the nodes. It has to do something with emissive material and the right label material and the backside surface mask in the transparency channel or maybe an occlusion.

I try to send a PM to Eric Brock the master nut cracker ninja.
